With the emergence of controlled breathwork practices as potential tools for stress management and well-being, this study compared three different daily five-min. breathwork exercises with an equivalent period of mindfulness meditation over a period of one month.
The results showed that breath-work, especially exhale-focused cyclic sighing, produces greater improvement in mood and reduction in respiratory rate compared with mindfulness meditation. Daily five-minute cyclic sighing has particular promise as an effective stress management exercise.
