YOGA THERAPY SESSIONS & SEMINARS

Weekly Yoga Therapy Sessions

Dilip Sarkar, MD, FACS, C-IAYT, D. Litt (Yoga)

Since 2006, Dilip Sarkar, MD, FACS, C-IAYT, D. Litt (Yoga), and Chair of Taksha’s Center for Integrative Medicine and Yoga (CIMY) has volunteered his time as a community service to conduct Yoga Therapy Classes on the topic of Daily Practice, each session being two hours long, two or three times weekly, in Virginia’s Hampton Roads area. (See the YSN Calendar for details.) These classes are sponsored by Taksha Institute Center for Integrative Medicine and Yoga (CIMY).

In contrast with other types of yoga classes, Dr. Sarkar teaches Yoga Therapy, or the “therapeutic outcome of yoga,” using the philosophy of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra-s (Yoga Aphorisms) and the practice of “Ashtanga Yoga” (8-limbed Yoga). In Yoga Therapy, the “para-sympathetic response” (relaxation response) is invoked, to induce physical and mental relaxation, in contrast to invoking the body’s “sympathetic response” that occurs in exercise or other yoga practices.

Dr. Sarkar is assisted by his volunteer team of yoga instructors, including Abha Gupta, PhD, and in her absence, guest instructors Saghana Chakrabortty, MD,  Ganapati Myneni, MD, Frank Alvarado, Piary Siobhan, and Aruna Swarup, pictured below, and Ramani Kotaru and Aparna Bararia Shah (not pictured).
